Carp Fishing at Gweryd Lakes in North Wales
Llyn Gweryd (12½ acres: 5 Ha), is now regarded as one of the leading Carp waters in Wales and is regularly reported in the angling press. Rob Hughes featured Llyn Gweryd on the Carp Show on Sky (see photo right). Crafty Carper magazine and Total Carp Fishing have both featured the lake in editorial in recent years as a commercial fishery of repute. |
Llyn Gweryd is a natural spring fed lake set 1000ft above sea level in stunning mountain scenery. Its wild fish were roach and perch and historically it was stocked with trout. Over 20 years ago it was changed to a coarse lake and was then stocked with rudd, tench, bream, and crucian carp and with common, mirror and ghost carp of then up to 15lb in size.
The three species of carp have thrived and produced some amazing hybrid fish over the years. All three types can be caught to over 20lb with at least 50 fish of that size , several hundred 15 – 19lb with lake averaging 13lb there is a high stock of singles too, all hard fighting and in wonderful condition.
Having a mix of coarse fish keeps the lake eco systems in a healthy state as there is always competition for food. The main feature of the lake is the magical Peat Island which disappears in October as the waters chill – to reappear in normally in May. Its changing shape and iceberg like qualities always fascinate anglers who are drawn like the fish to it. Many other areas of the lake can attract fish too, the shallows of the reeds and where the soft silt gives way to gravel patches. The springs channelling across the lake, create currents around the lake and around the box island. |
In the winter carp hold to the deeper middle and especially the back of the peat island which is about 15ft, but as much of the lake is relatively shallow average 5ft. The carp can move quickly out to the warmer areas in the sun and milder weather, and is generally not considered a hard lake in these conditions. Although the lake holds natural food in blood worm and shrimp, it has been fished with boiles for a long time many baits still catch carp even maggot, meat and corn. As the waters naturally flush through and wind oxygenates the water most baits are permitted, with the exception of those believed to unhealthy or toxic to the fish.
Gweryd has two very different banks with the shaded wood bank offering pegs built out into the lake through reeds. The south facing bank on the hut side has open bank and is nearer the peat island. The west bank is not pegged being very shallow 18in and marshy – it is a conservation area for wild life, and spawning ground. Gweryd Lakes has an abundance of wild life both in the air and on its banks and expects anglers to leave the place beautiful and safe, and to be responsible.

Fishing tips - In the warmer weather spodding out a good partimix with hemp and evaporated milk has attracted carp into a frenzy of feeding. Try zig rigs or a controller float set well up in the water. In cold conditions a single hook bait set with a snowman rig or a misshaped boilie, with line pinned down and no freebies, will generally do the trick. Remember if things are quiet try something else – if you are catching work to keep the interest.
We try to keep our news reports up to date if you tell us what you have caught and how!
Llyn Gweryd has 15 all weather bivvy pegs plus a further 14 pegs. All are easily accessible from the three car parks. A number are suitable for disabled anglers.
Day, 24 hour and longer stay tickets are available. Carp fishing is restricted to a maximum of 20 pegs/ anglers at any one time on Llyn Gweryd, so it is important to book to avoid disappointment. |
