Horse Riding at Gweryd

We are a riding and competing family who are happy to share our facilities with riders who wish to bring their own horses for days out or longer stays. (Unfortunately we cannot offer trekking or hire of horses.) We also offer livery facilities for a small number of horses (see bottom of page).

Enjoy spectacular views and stunning scenery, whilst you exercise and have fun with your horse.

Gweryd Lakes has ample parking space for horseboxes and trailers. We can provide a base for a day out on horseback. We can also offer:

Indoor equestrian riding arena 38 x 18 m.
Safe turn out paddocks and grazing fields.
Safe parking for trailers and horseboxes.
A farm ride due for completion early 2006 (3 ½ miles with 20 optional jumps)
Toilets and showers.
Café.

If you would like to stay longer in the area and ride your horse from host to host for anything from 2 to 10 days we can organise holidays through Wales On Horseback. The Gweryd Lake owners, Robin and Jeanette Mitchell are founder directors of Wales On Horseback, which is a non-profit making co-operative promoting and organising trail riding in north east Wales.

Livery Facilities

We are a riding and competing family, who provide excellent facilities for a maximum of ten liveries at any one time.

The American Barn style stables are set within 150 acres of pasture, lakes and woodland located within the Clwyd Mountains Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Denbighshire.

Flexible DIY or part livery options are available to suit the needs of each and every rider from £20 per horse per week.

Facilities include:

Spacious indoor stables.
Indoor riding arena 38 x 18 m
A farm ride due for completion early 2006 (3 ½ miles with 20 optional jumps)
BHS AI qualified owner.
Secure tack and feed storage.
Safe turn out paddocks and grazing fields.
Safe parking for trailers and horseboxes.
Locally produced quality haylage available.
Toilets and showers.
Café.

The stables are located 50 metres from a bridle path, which gives access to miles of riding throughout the area on bridle paths, old drovers routes and quiet country lanes.

We are part of Wales On Horseback, which provides a network of routes, route guides and accommodation for horse and rider throughout NE Wales.

Our facilities are designed to enable you to enjoy your horse outdoors and indoors whatever the weather.

It is going to be a fantastic event one not to be missed.

The Sunday will be the finals day but lots will be happening on other days to learn more about this skillful horse sport.

This will show you the best in the sport - but it can be played in lower grades at all ages and is huge fun!!!

If you want a lift to go on the finals day 17th July a minibus is being organised from Coachmans Riding Centre Sychdyn nr Mold and on route pickups might be possible.

Convincing win for UK Open Ladies against Irish in Polocrosse Test Match

Celyn Polocrosse Club hosted a weekend of international test matches alongside their club tournament, in Mollington, Nr Chester last weekend.

Two Open test matches UK vs Ireland- Mens and Ladies and a Junior Tri-nations UK vs Ire vs NSW Australia.

The Ladies played at 12:30 on Saturday and were tuned in from the off, putting in a very good tactical team performance. In a game where you play just 6 minute chukkas it is essential to be on the ball instantly and focused all the time. As an international the two sections played 4 chukkas each on the same horse with just one spare to substitute in but with 2 extra players to swap in. For two of the ladies this was their first open international and they all were skilfully swapped into the match by their coach Doug Web who had come over for a month to coach the team from Australia, and to run general training clinics for polocrosse clubs. Although twins Ruth Jones and Sarah Simkin have each played in previous World cups they have never played together they formed a very special partnership in this team.

After a brilliant win on Saturday, the UK ladies had to stay focussed and not let complacency take over going into Sunday’s game. They came out playing as if they were 10 goals down and pulled off another great win.

Open Mens: UK v IRE

Juniors: UK v IRE v NSW

The teams played each other once on Saturday and once on Sunday. The team from NSW Australia had come over by invitation to stay in this country hosted by different families for a month playing some UK tournaments culminating in this Tri Nations event with the u16 Irish bringing their own horses and the UK loaning horses to the Aussies. Many on the UK squad had been over to Australia in 2009.

NSW: Won 3 Drew 1

Ire: Won 2 Lost 2

UK: Drew 1 Lost 3

Winners: NSW

The next major event in the Polocrosse calendar in the World Cup It is being held in the UK for the first time in Beverley, East Yorkshire, July 2011. The Open Men and Ladies will be trying to impress the selectors as only 4 Men and 4 Ladies play in the team. After the weekend’s performance, it will be a tough decision.
